Frequently Asked Questions

Questions

1.What is the link between osteoporosis and menopause?

Estrogen, a female hormone, protects against bone loss. After menopause, the ovaries produce very little estrogen. This decrease in estrogen triggers a period of rapid bone loss in women that starts one year before the final menstrual period and lasts for about three years. The natural effects of ageing on bones may also contribute to this bone loss.

Problems with ovulation account for most cases of infertility in women. Without ovulation, there are no eggs to be fertilised. Some signs that a woman is not ovulating normally include irregular or absent menstrual periods. Less common causes of fertility problems in women include:

  • Blocked fallopian tubes due to pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis or surgery for an ectopic pregnancy
  • Physical problems with the uterus
  • Uterine fibroids

Fertility testing should be scheduled if: a woman is younger than 35 and has been trying to get pregnant for one year with no success or if a woman is over the age of 35 and has been trying to get pregnant for six months with no success.

Women are usually in their late 40s or early 50s when the menopause transition starts. However, earlier menopause can be the result of surgery, cancer treatment, or family genetics.
